Translations

Translation involves understanding the meaning of the (source) text to produce a text in another language (the target language), which transfers the concepts from one language to another while maintaining the meaning and style of the source text.

Translation rates are calculated by one of three systems: a standard text page of 1500 characters (including spaces), a text line of 55 characters (including spaces) of the target language, or per word (200 words equals about 1 standard text page) of the source text. Prices are net of VAT and gross of the withholdings tax. Each invoice includes a 4% social security compensation to be paid by the client as per ex. L. 662/96 art. 1 c. 212.

Each translation will be assigned with a letter of engagement, specifying the responsibilities of the interpreter and the client.

Ideally, the translator should see the source text in advance and work with the client to decide how best to organize the project.

Dialogic Interpretation

An interpreter makes communication possible in business negotiations and work discussions in which a limited number of people are participating without using consecutive or simultaneous interpretation techniques.

A day of work equals 7 working hours. The rate may be calculated on an hourly or daily basis according to the client’s needs. For off-site jobs, in addition to the fee, the interpreter must be paid a per diem or given full accommodations as well as be reimbursed for travel expenses.

Simultaneous Interpretation

Interpretation that the interpreter provides in a sound-proof booth at the same time as the speaker speaks. Simultaneous interpretation equipment is needed to provide this service. Not only must simultaneous interpreters have deep knowledge of the foreign language and excellent oral skills, they are also specially trained at colleges for interpreters. In addition, they must always stay up to date on the topics of conferences, preparing for each assignment by studying the subject material.

Consecutive Interpretation

Consecutive interpretation is a technique in which the interpreter takes notes while the speaker is talking and then recreates it in the target language. The speaker will stop speaking to allow for the interpreting, following the timing and methods agreed upon with the interpreter based on the presentation’s features. The note-taking technique (which is not related to shorthand) is a complex system of symbols and abbreviations devised to memorize concepts and facilitate their interpretation. Consecutive interpreting involves much longer working times (almost double that when simultaneous interpreting is used) but does not require any technical devices or equipment.

Chouchotage Interpreting

Chuchotage (from French “chuchoter,” “to whisper”) is the simultaneous interpretation of the speaker’s words whispered in the ear of one or two participants and requires no simultaneous interpreting or other equipment. This service may be used when one or two participants do not know the language of a conference or meeting. If the participant wants to speak, the interpreter provides consecutive interpreting.
